Colonial life - Political
During colonial times the people of New England created meeting houses. These were usually built by the community and also usually payed for by the community through taxes. Many of these meeting houses were not only used for town meeting and political discussions but also for worship. Those elected would meet here with the others elected to represent the community and talk about the problems at hand and what they were going to do. This was the first show of the people running things for themselves, and because these meetings and what was talked about was not completely publicized this helped to spark the revolution and thoughts for independence.
